The Story Behind the Crown and the Cattle

My name is Erica Yvette Garcia, and I am a proud advocate for agriculture, the western way of life, and the communities that shaped me. I am from New Mexico, where my passion for agriculture, livestock, rodeo, and leadership has grown into not only a career path but a way of life.

Unlike many people in agriculture, I did not grow up with a large agricultural background. Instead, my passion was built through opportunity, hard work, and the people who encouraged me along the way. Through programs like 4-H and FFA, I found a place where I could learn, lead, and grow. I became involved in livestock projects, public speaking, leadership opportunities, shooting sports, food and consumer science, and community service. These experiences taught me that agriculture is more than production; it is people, education, responsibility, and service.

My livestock journey began when I was young, and over time it developed into one of the biggest parts of my life. I started showing cattle around the age of 14 and eventually began raising and selling show cattle to youth exhibitors. Today, through EY Show Cattle, I continue to raise livestock, mentor young people, and help families become involved in the show industry. Raising livestock has taught me patience, responsibility, business management, communication, and the importance of doing things the right way, even when no one is watching.

I am currently pursuing my education in agriculture, building on both classroom knowledge and hands-on experience. I earned associate degrees in agricultural business and communications from Allen Community College in Iola, Kansas, and I am now a senior at New Mexico State University, majoring in Agricultural Economics with a minor in Livestock Production. At NMSU, I have continued to grow as a student, leader, and advocate through involvement in livestock judging, agricultural organizations, and professional development opportunities.

Agricultural advocacy has become one of my greatest passions. I have had the honor of serving as the 2022 New Mexico Miss Agriculture USA and later as the 2023 National Runner-Up Miss Agriculture USA. Through these titles, I traveled, spoke, and shared the story of agriculture with different audiences. These opportunities helped me understand the importance of being a voice for producers, rural communities, and the future of the industry.

Rodeo and western heritage are also a major part of my story. As the Bosque Farms Rodeo Association Queen, I have the privilege of representing rodeo, agriculture, and the western lifestyle at events and community appearances. This role has allowed me to connect with people of all ages, promote the values of hard work and tradition, and encourage young women to step confidently into leadership roles.

In addition to rodeo and livestock, I am passionate about communication and media. As a New Mexico State Media Ambassador for The Foundation for Western Professionals, I work to highlight the people, stories, and industries that make New Mexico agriculture so important. Whether I am writing, interviewing producers, creating social media content, or speaking to groups, my goal is always to educate others and help bridge the gap between agricultural producers and consumers.

Leadership has shaped every part of who I am. From 4-H and FFA to livestock judging, rodeo queen titles, agricultural advocacy, and youth mentorship, I have learned that leadership is not about being the loudest person in the room. It is about serving others, staying authentic, and using your experiences to make a difference.

My journey has not always been easy, but it has made me stronger, more driven, and more grateful. I am proud to represent agriculture because I know how much it has given me. It has given me confidence, purpose, lifelong friendships, and a future I am excited to continue building.

Today, I continue to use my voice to advocate for agriculture, support youth, promote the western way of life, and share the stories of the people who feed, clothe, and care for our communities. My mission is to continue growing as a communicator, leader, and agricultural professional while helping others understand the value and impact of agriculture in everyday life.
